Library Relocation

Print E-mail

The Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library will be relocating to Marine Terrace next year. The City of Geraldton-Greenough has purchased a former supermarket site which fronts Marine Terrace and backs on to Chapman Road.

The Library is being relocated for two reasons. Firstly, the newly amalgamated City of Geraldton and Shire of Greenough needs room to house its considerable staff and its council chambers in one location. At present, facilities and staff are located on two separate sites and this situation leads to inefficiencies and poor customer service.

The Library has outgrown its present location. Changing technologies, a growing population, increased staffing, diversity of services offered, larger collections and lack of storage space have all contributed to general overcrowding.

The opportunity to relocate is seen as a chance to plan the library around the services we offer. Benefits will include adequate office space for staff, meeting rooms, dedicated areas for WiFi users, a parking area directly behind the building, a shopfront location as well as storage facilities and room to house our growing collection.

Funding
On 28/04/09, Minister Anthony Albanese and the Parliamentary Secretary Gary Gray announced the Rudd Labor Government would commit up to $2.4 million towards the expansion and relocation of the Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library.

These plans are still being finalised, but we would like to keep our patrons informed about any developments as they occur.

QUESTIONS POSTED ON OUR LIBRARY RELOCATION DISPLAY BOARD

Do you like chicken?
Most of the library staff do like chicken, both for keeping as pets and as food.  For more about chickens go to 636.5 or 641 for cooking.

Why is the Library moving?
The Library has grown and needs more room. The Council will also be able to offer a better service when they are located in just the one building.

Could the height of the shelves please be higher?
It is difficult for many people to search the bottom shelves.

We will be aiming to use most of the top shelves and the bottom shelves of for display purposes.

Yes we do, check our catalogue for titles or to make reservations.

Is there a mat/rug area in the kids area?
There will be a special Storytime area.

Why don’t you have Dear Dumb Diary books?
We will consider them in our stock collection.

How many Libraries are there?
There is/will be only one in Geraldton. We’re moving!

Have more Asian Literature and writers, more European writers who have written in English and be more international instead of having bigoted tunnel vision.
Being a multicultural nation, the Library is always open to extending the stock collection to International writers. If you have any suggestions, please make them known to the staff at the front desk.
