The Monsignor Hawes Heritage ProjectThe Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library supports the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Project. Please click here for a link to the website. Digitisation of PhotographsIn 2002 Heritage Services commenced digitising the Library’s photograph collection. To date over 2000 photographs have been scanned and are currently being indexed onto the Library catalogue. Approximately 500 images are now accessible through the main catalogue. Mid West Heritage Booklet SeriesThe Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library received funding from Lotterywest to publish a series of booklets on historical topics specific to the Mid West region. It is envisaged that the booklets will relate the history of the area in an engaging and informative way and in a form accessible to the public. The first six booklets in the series will be: Point Moore Lighthouse; Geraldine Lead Mine; Crayfishing Industry; Railways of the Region; Aboriginal Culture; Weibe Hayes/Batavia Story. Mid West Oral History ProjectThe Geraldton – Greenough Regional Library has appointed Gary Martin and Peter Dameon as the Oral History Co-ordinators for the Midwest Oral History Project. The project has been developed to strengthen the oral history collection at the Library and at the same time find other agencies and individuals that the Library can partner with to develop a more strategic and co-ordinated approach to oral history in the Mid West. The project aims to; - Investigate best practices in technology for long term preservation and access to oral history.
- Recruit and train a group of volunteers to become more involved in collecting and preserving oral history.
- Find new and innovative ways oral history can be presented to and accessed by the community (such as virtual touring exhibitions).
- Identify gaps in the social history of the community and endeavour to fill those gaps with interesting oral history interviews.
- This is a 12 month project running from April 2008 – April 2009 and the Oral History Co-ordinators will explore ways to ensure its long term sustainability.
This project is supported by funding from the City of Geraldton–Greenough, Lotterywest, the Australian Government under its Regional Partnerships programme, Mid West Development Commission, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Geraldton Fisherman’s Co-Op, Irra Wangga – Geraldton Language Programme, Friends of Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library, Eastman Poletti Sherwood Architects, Grant Woodhams MLA, Hon.
